For those of you who would like to shoot an Elk, but are unable to use all of the meat, the Iowa Chapter, SCI will be happy to help share in the cost of processing in exchange for a donation of a percentage of the meat for our Great Buffalo Giveaway program.
Contact me to work out the details.
The Great Buffalo Giveaway has donated enough high quality Bison and Elk meat over the last seven years in the Central Iowa area to provide over 14,000 meals. This is an on going effort by the Iowa Chapter, SCI and Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) to assist local non-profit agencies in their ongoing efforts to provide meals to their constituents.
And Ron, sign me up for at least a cow or management bull.

I need meat for the freezer, and am not sure I can shoot enough squirrels.

is the $5 dollar hunting permit for the land owner? i assume that since this is high fenced private property there are no MO permits needed.
is there a limit on how many elk can be taken? (I.E. – what if 20 people want to shoot elk?)
if a lot of elk are taken, where can they be processed and how will transportation of the carcasses be handled?FYI – there is a large wild game processor in Dallas but you definitely do not want to use them. they just take your animal, weigh it, and throw it in with all of the other like species being processed. so, when you get your finished product it may actually be from an animal that someone else killed.

That is a good deal.
I hunted an eland in Texas with my double rifle on a place about that size. There was a lot of thick woods and it was not just a shoot. I hunted three different days till I got the eland with my 450 No2. I “worked” harder for aht eland than for a lot of game I have taken in the “wild”.The meat was great and I got to test a bullet on a big critter before I went to Africa.
Another person was hunting eland with a double rifle with me as well. He shot one with a 450/400 double. We had a fun time. -

2000 acres aprox. under high fence
So, that’s about 3000 yards by 3000 yards… figure find a high spot, and the longest shot would be 2000 yards… standard drop for the 300 gr .338 Sierra doing 2900 fps at my elevation would be 22.9 mils… Figure a five inch head/spine target on an elk — better be safe and call it four inches or 0.2 MOA… ok, it’s a stretch, but that works.
Can the scope you’re going to loan me range and compensate to 1/10 mil?
Elevation and likely humidity would be nice, too, if you happen to have that. I’d hate to miss the head shot and be forced to waste meat with a body shot.

I assumed fixed 4x — I saw one on eBay, or maybe Walmart, for $9.

Here is a question for you math types. If an acres is 209 feet by 209 feet, how many yards is it across a 2000 square acre parcel? A square mile is 640 acres.
2000 divided by 640 = 3.125 square miles. 5280 feet in a mile x 3.125 = 16500 divided by 3 = 5500 yards squareGuns and Labs better bring a bigger gun. Don’t worry about a scope we will just use forward observers! 😉
You need a square root in there somewhere to get from area to linear dimensions…
2000 acres at 640 per square mile give you 3.13 square miles. That would be 1.77 miles by 1.77 miles. Or 3,111 yards by 3,111 yards. Which means, with a high spot in th middle of the square the maximum shot to the edge — according to Pythagoras — would be 2,200 yards. Well within the capabilities of the .338 Lapua Magnum, .408 Cheytac, or the .416 Barrett, WITH A PROPER SCOPE.
A spotter or forward observer would be nice, though. Thank you for offering.

I have run it again and you are off by a little over a foot, however there is no high spot as the whole 2000 acres is one big high spot covered with standing timber. A 45 Blaser and a 2.5 power scope with a reticle made out of baling wire duct taped over the objective will work as well as any.
You’ll have to demonstrate. We don’t have any baling wire in California — only zip ties. Duct tape, of course, we have.
You can tape it on my Marlin .45-70 (since I don’t have a .45 Blaser either).

I think a cow will be fine for me. There will be enough bull at the camp site.

I am curious.
Those of you that are planning on hunting elk, what rifle, calibre and bullet will you be using?

That would be a good choice. What bullet?
You have put together a good event. Being able to hunt an elk and take home the meat is a good deal. 😀
I wish I could go. 👿

It will be first blood for my 9.3×62 semi-weight, most likely with the basic Primi 286gr stuff in that heavy cover. If I have time to do load development before then, it will be with the 250gr A-frames.

Dave
Either of those should work. The 9,3×62 is perfect for that kind of hunt, ie elk up close in the thick.

My reply to caliber and bullet would usually be the same as most of my replies to this question —- 300 WSM and 180 gr Barnes TSX. I might have to go to the 9.3 x 62 tho’ just to make Corjack question if his 8mm is too light. I just love a good psychological game.

.350 RemMag, probably with the 225 gr Partition load that I’ve been working with lately.

The 350 RM is a good calibre. I had one once [Rem mod 7 custom shop] and I liked it. It is an ideal medium bore.

I was wondering if you sold the 6.5 barrel or you just changed your mind. Now I know.
